Derek Byrne M.Sc. – LGBT+ Education Officer (PT)

Derek comes to Men’s Aid with over twenty years of experience in the community and voluntary sector.

Specialising in Drug and Alcohol policy, Derek has worked as an Academic with the department of Community and Adult Education at Maynooth University since 2004. However, he has also worked in front-line service provision most notably managing a drug rehabilitation programme in Dublin 10 and as the Rehabilitation Officer at the Clondalkin Drug and Alcohol Task Force.

As a Journalist and Broadcaster Derek has been a regular contributor to the Opinion section of the Irish Times since 2014 writing primarily on issues relating to the LGBT community, issues of equality and drug and alcohol policy in contemporary Ireland.

Kathrina Bentley, CEO Men’s Aid said “Derek aims to coordinate an integrated response from Men’s Aid to the growing need of men in same sex relationships who are victims/survivors of domestic violence and coercive control while raising awareness of the services available to these men by designing and delivering education and training workshops to a variety of stakeholder within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond”.

We are very grateful to Minister O’Gorman as this is a new initiative funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth in response to the growing demand for Men’s Aid services within the LGBT+ community.
