Our LGBTQ+ Domestic Violence workshops challenge heteronormative constructs of domestic violence.

They facilitate a discourse of change in relation to domestic violence and coercive control whilst working within a collaborative framework and interagency approach to service provision.

These workshops provide a solid foundation for the development of policy in relation to Diversity, Inclusion and Equality in the workplace and are ideal for promoting health & well-being among staff.

All our training and workshop modules follow the 3 x R’s – How to Recognise, How to Respond and How to Refer male victims of domestic violence and coercive control.

Our training and education team apply evidence-based adult education methodologies in the design and delivery of all our training and education initiatives.

Derek Byrne M.Sc. is an Academic and Journalist working and living in Dublin. He has over twenty years’ experience working in the community and voluntary sector and is permanently employed on a part-time basis as the LGBTQ+ Programme Coordinator with Men’s Aid Ireland. Derek also teaches on the Addiction Studies programme in the department of Adult & Community Education at Maynooth University and is an experienced Journalist and Broadcaster.

Since joining Men’s Aid in April 2022, Derek has designed and delivered a range of workshops to an Garda Siochana, domestic violence service providers, LGBTQ+ organisations, third level institutions and social workers across Ireland.

The workshops focus on the prevalent and unique factors of domestic violence in an LGBTQ+ context and explore structural inequalities that can lead to a lack of help-seeking and facilitate invisibility of this cohort in terms of service provision, resources, and policy development.

Derek is an advocate for greater service provision for members of the LGBTQ+ communities who are disabled and those living with HIV. His specific area of interest is the role of internalised homophobia in the perpetration of IPV among gay, bisexual and transgender men and the links between Intimate Partner Violence, Coercive Control and HIV transmission among gbtMSM within the context of ChemSex.

Since January 2024, Derek has been working in Collaboration with Graham Ryall of the Rialto Community Drug Team, delivering a half-day conference on the complexities of ChemSex from a non-judgemental, harm-reduction approach to services, including an Garda Siochanna, across Ireland.

Derek was an Independent candidate for Seanad Eireann on the Dublin City University (TCD) panel in 2020 and 2025.
