Men’s Stories – Survivor’s Story

“Hello, once upon a time (a few years ago.) I sat in a car and rang your service. A friend had urged me to do it. I did not want to. But I did. The ringing tone started and a voice said hello, I think it was a man called Paul but I am probably wrong. It took me a while to get around to saying why I rang because I just broke down.  That call first call was first of a few. At one stage I also had a meeting with a lovely lady Andrea in the West of Ireland.

I realize this email is vague and without detail but the reason is simple. The trauma involved in walking away from a volatile 19 year marriage and ALL that entails brings with it PTSD, vague memories due to shock and deliberate avoidance of trying to recollect.

but…

Because I rang you and because you were there, without judgement, with understanding, a listening ear, advice, support, offers of services, offers of legal help, validation and knowledge…the heartbreaking process of separation and divorce became a logical progression because you shone a torch on the darkness of silent abuse.

Anyway, My divorce is close because agreement was reached a couple of days ago.

So, this is just another story but there is not a week goes by when I don’t think of what you did for me at the darkest time.

I want to thank each and every one of you in Men’s Aid for your invaluable help. I apologize because I can’t remember times, dates or names.

Thank You.

The work you all do is phenomenal and in the true sense of the word, awesome.”
